Set up a Website Domain and Hosting
Up to this point everything in terms of marketing has been free. You’ll have to spend a little money to get your website set up properly. This step should cost no more than 40 or 50 dollars to start.
First you’ll want to select a good domain name for your website. We recommend Hostgator as your one-stop source for domain name and website hosting. They are known for great prices and support services. A few important considerations should go into this decision as follows:
Choose a domain name that is simple and easy to remember
Choose a domain name that is dot com if possible
Choose a domain name that is as short as possible
Choose a domain name that is not taken
Choose a domain name that has the keywords in it that people will be searching for (example: funfidgets.com, or freefidgets.com)
Choose a domain name that is not broken by a hyphen if possible
Getting the right domain name is a creative process. Ask friends or family to come up with a good name if possible.
The video below walks you through the process of both getting website hosting and a domain name.
Another important point in registering a domain name is to purchase more than one year on it. You will be given the option to buy your domain for one to four years. The main reason for getting it for more than one year at a time is because Google takes the length of time that the domain is going to be active into consideration when indexing search results. They figure that if a domain is long term then it is less likely to be a fly-by-night scam and has serious intentions on the web.

We highly suggest you install WordPress for your website. WordPress (like HostGator) does it all. It’s also streamlined and has a fantastic support knowledgebase. There are also video tutorials like the one below, if you run into any problems along the way.
The video below will help you get started setting up your WordPress site and getting the look and feel just how you want it.
Once you have gotten your WordPress up and running with the desired theme you’ll probably want some custom graphics. There are plenty of free and pay online resources available for making your own graphics. Just search Google for whatever you need. Be sure not to just grab photos and publish them. Get permission or use a stock photo service such as 123RF.com to purchase licensed images. That last thing you need is a nasty copyright lawsuit.
Again, you can always have someone on Fiverr.com or Craigslist.org create and install custom graphics for you. As was said before the only draw back is the cost. We always want to keep costs down. Less overhead generally means more profit.
Search Engine Optimization for WordPress
Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, is a technique used to improve your rankings when people search for the content you’re providing. When people search for your keywords and/or key phrases on Google or any other search engine, you want your site pages to be shown as high as possible in the search listings.
Search optimization is an expansive topic but we can put you on the fast track. You’ll need to put in a little work on your site and much of search optimization has to do with age of your domain. Here’s what we recommend you do with your WordPress site:
Install the plug-in Yoast SEO
Go to your pages tab and select ‘view all pages’
Enter in keywords and descriptions for each page on your site. Be sure to enter in all the most commonly used search terms pertaining to your product.
Under the Yoast SEO tab just underneath your content page, edit the ‘snippet’. This is what shows in the link and description when people are shown your site in the search engine results.
Enter in your Focus keyword. Be sure that no two pages have the same focus keyword.
Pay attention to the green, red and orange icons shown for readability and focus keyword. These will prove a very helpful guide for you.
Make sure the each page shows a green checkmark on the right hand side of the page under ‘publish’.
Search Engine Optimization is a multi-faceted approach. You’ll need to abide by many rules that the Yoast SEO plug-in will outline for you. If you do that, you should see positive results and watch your page get higher rankings each week.
Readability is equally as important as keywords and your focus keywords for SEO. If your website is scattered and difficult to read without headlines to separate each topic, you’ll have a poor score for readability and that will in turn affect your ranking with the search engines.

The video below is a good primer on Alexa ranking.
Alexa.com has been around for decades and its primary function is to give us an idea of how popular an individual website might be. This can have an important impact on your site’s credibility. It is believed that the major search engines weigh the Alexa ranking of websites in their algorithms when ranking websites in their search results.
You can download your Alexa toolbar here:
Note: You’ll want to download the proper toolbar for the browser you intend to use most often. For instance if you are using Firefox, then download the appropriate Firefox toolbar. If you are using Chrome then likewise download the proper toolbar.
